(Note: I've adjusted a good lot of the ages to make sure everything makes sense...as close as getting to making sense, at least.)
Years after twins Infante Santiago and Infanta Euphemia were born, Doña Nedda found herself pregnant once again, this time with one girl. To everyone's surprise, the child was born one month early, albeit as healthy as could be. The daughter's name was Princesa Paloma Inez Francesca Minerva de Ramal y di Sforza, or Infanta Paloma.
Rumours abound once more in the kingdom about the queen. While in the previous years, most people had managed to adapt to Nedda's presence as Don Carmelo's second wife, seeds of doubt were sown once again. Is it really Nedda's way to deliver children earlier than expected, or is she truly pregnant with someone else besides the king? The people know that if the child were to be conceived nine instead of eight months ago, Don Carmelo would be away from the castle, and thus would not be present at the time of Infanta Paloma's conception.
Don Carmelo, as confused as ever, began to receive a new nickname from his country: "The Indecisive". His constant meditations on which course of action to take seems to have bothered people, especially those who believed that the king's captain of the royal guard was the man Doña Nedda was having an affair with. The captain of the royal guard, Duca Andres, was a handsome and charismatic man - to some, even more so than the king.
Doña Nedda pleaded with her husband repeatedly to not be swayed by the public's attempts at destroying her reputation, but Don Carmelo remained in his neutral state. Infanta Aida, now able to understand the state of matters, insisted vehemently that her Mamma Nedda will never do something of the sort, with Infanta Ofelia and Infanta Ana mostly echoing what their sister thinks. Twelve-year-old Vasco, though, still maintains his cool reserve in the presence of his father's second wife, keeping his manners intact yet distant, thawing only when the brother he kept watch over came along. Infante Dani had, through the years, reciprocated his elder brother's deep concern and devotion, and the two of them grew inseparable. Agile and confident as his way is, Vasco once even taught Dani how to scale the walls up to the roof of a smaller section of the castle, much to their father's and servants' horror. Don Carmelo tried to make Vasco promise not to get Dani in trouble again, but finally let up when Dani defended his brother staunchly. This incident, along with Vasco's watchful and guarding attitude to Dani, has caused him to be nicknamed "The Eagle". Don Carmelo was touched by his illegitimate son's devotion, but was quite concerned that when the time comes for Dani to rule on his own, he will be unable to stand on his own two feet.
