The O’Malley Family
DH: Ian Sean (19)
DE: Nora Maeve (19)
DD: Gladys Ruth
The year is 1887, and young newlyweds Nora and Ian have decided to leave the poverty and oppression of their native Ireland and sail to America, where they have both been offered jobs in the grocery owned by Ian’s aunt, who lives in New York City. Shortly after they left, Nora discovered she was pregnant. Ellis Island doctors confirmed, and their daughter was born in the spring after they arrived in America. They want their daughter’s FN to be Irish and her MN to reflect her parents’ optimism for their new country and its ideals.
The Feldman Family
DH: Avrum Hersh (25)
DW: Raisa Hodel (21)
DD/DS: Daniel Levi / Rachel Esther
The year is 1892, and Avrum and Raisa have left their native Russia to escape the persecution they face for their Jewish faith. They know they will still face some racism in America, but they are willing to accept it to escape the violence. They settled in Brooklyn and opened a tailor’s shop and are prospering. They recently discovered how great their luck was when Raisa gave birth to twins, a son and a daughter! They want their children to fit into American society, so they want them to have English versions of traditionally Jewish names.
The Shu Family
DH: Li Gang (22)
DW: Min Huan (17)
DS: Jian Guo
The year is 1894, and shortly after their marriage, Li Gang decided to leave China and take himself and his young new wife to America, to California to work on the railroad. He is gone much of the time, and Min Huan lives with relatives of Li Gang’s above their restaurant in San Francisco’s Chinatown. He is worked for weeks, even months on end, but he was able to be with her for the birth of their son! They want his name to be Chinese, with the first part to mean “strong” and the second part to mean something nature-related.
