This is my daughter,
Anna Sofia.
Think: Combining a name I'm sick of with a name I can't stand. How novel.
Say: Nice to meet you,
Anna.
This is my son,
Nathaniel Jacob. We call him
Nathan.
Think:
NAT. Don't call him
Nat, because they'll be irritated. Just pretend
Nathan's not ugly and inferior to one of your favourite nicknames.
Say: How nice. How'd you come up with the idea of calling him
Nathan?
This is my daughter,
Adriana (ah-dree-AH-nah)
Sofia.
Think: Poncy as
sin. Who's so pretentious as to say ah-dree-AH-nah? I'm going to avoid using her name.
Say: What a nice name.
This is my son,
Benjamin Joshua. We don't use a nickname.
Think: Congrats on the no nickname thing--we'll see how long that lasts. Note to self: Do not call him
Benno,
Benji, Jammers, Jammin, Benj, or
Benny, no matter how much you want to.
Say: How nice to meet you,
Benjamin.
This is my daugter,
Anne Katarina.
Think:
Anne's so lovely. Wish I could call her
Nan, though.
Say: What a gorgeous name!
This is my son,
Nicholas Ian. Sometimes we call him
Nico.
Think: Sometimes? So I'm expected to pick when it's appropriate? Far too complicated for me. Let the boy be a Nico--it's a perfectly respectable name, and it's much more fun than
Nicholas.
Say: What a lovely name--Nico's an old favourite of mine.
This is my daughter,
Tatiana (tah-tee-AH-nah)
Camille (cah-MEEL).
Think: Does the lack of "we call her ____" mean I can't give her a nickname? She's so cute that she'd make a fine Tatya--or
Tia. It's so awkward when parents insist on undendingly-long names and get huffy if you have the nerve to call the child anything other than her four syllables.
Say: What a nice name! Do you ever go by any nicknames,
Tatiana?
This is my son,
Luca Nathaniel.
Think: No words here. Just feelings of love so simple that words are completely unecessary.
Say:
Luca Nathaniel is a wonderful name!
This is my daughter,
Lila (LIE-lah)
Simone.
Think: Well, she can fall back on the incredibly classy
Simone when she's tired of her nouveau-yuppie first name.
Say: What a nice name--Simone's gorgeous.
Apparently, my internal voice is something of a bitch. Really sorry about that.
