The 2nd world war was a terrifying time for the Bishop family, as 11 of the men went off to join the effort... 11 men from this family fought in the war... and they were lucky compared to many families out there... but they certainly didn't feel lucky when they only got 9 of those 11 men back. The great war took the lives of Alice's oldest son Teddy (aged 19 at the time of his death), and Will's son-in-law Sam (aged 21 at the time of his death). Teddy & Sam's death brought the whole family to support Alice, but more than anything they rallied around Sam's wife Betty who was pregnant at the time of Sam's death.
