In the Kingdom of Forestmere

During the past 12 years, the royal family has suffered through 3 miscarriages and 1 still birth. With the birth of their youngest, Queen Shula was informed that she would most likely be unable to conceive any more children... and if she did, the pregnancy would most likely kill her and the unborn child. While this news struck Queen Shula hard, it struck King Nico even harder. After almost a quarter-of-a-century of being King King Nico knew that being King meant making hard choices for the good of his people - and that he might suffer, but his Kingdom should never suffer. And there has been plenty of sacrifice upon the part of Nico, including his childhood, so that he could become the King his people needed. One thing that proved to be anything but a sacrifice was his marriage to the Sultana Shula. She had a fiery personality, a joy of life, and was very well educated. The two proved to be very different, but immensely compatible. Love soon followed the marriage, and the two cared for each other deeply. And now, King Nico's advisers wanted him to divorce Shula and take up another who might provide him with a male heir. Their reasoning was sound, as the heir presumptive, Prince Jules was to self-centered to ever be a decent King, and all of his royal nephews were also otherwise ruled out.No one wanted to split one of the numerous twins that seemed to abound in the family, as they all seemed extremely bonded to their other twin. That left four princes. (7) seemed to be sickly so often that the Queen Mother was fretful over his health - his breathing was often ragged and his lips were usually tinted blue. (5) was shy to the point of a phobia, and could in no way handle ruling a court - he would quickly end up somebody's puppet. (3) was unfortunately born with a disfigurement of the face and upper torso - so far his health seemed fine, but the royal physicians couldn't be sure that it would stay that way. And (4) was bonded with his little brother almost as close as any of the twins.King Nico was aware of the reasons and knew that it was more then a desire for a Crown Prince, but a necessity of the Kingdom. However, he did not want to leave one of the only happinesses he had found since being crowned King. Besides, his advisers were pushing girls as young as 14 in his direction - the youngest legal age to marry a King. They figured that with a young Queen, she would have more time to conceive a number of Prince's for the family. But, being twice the age of his Queen didn't appeal to the King. Neither did having a child bride. King Nico was happy with Shula. He was more then happy, he madly in love with his Queen.King Nico finally consulted with the Queen Mother, who retired from politics as soon as her son was comfortable being the sole ruler. After listening as the King laid out his troubles, the Queen Mother simply smiled and told him the answer would walk through her door in just a moment. Completely stumped, the King waited with the Queen Mother, watching and waiting for the door to open. After about 2 minutes, in walked his eldest daughter wanting to know if Grandmama wanted to have company for tea. The Queen Mother replied that she would love to have tea with her, and ringed for tea for the three of them. During tea, the Queen Mother and Princess Yasmina talked about various aspects of the Kingdom and the lands surrounding them. King Nico soon found himself drawn into the lively conversation, talking with his young daughter much as he would with her mother. When tea was over, Princess Yasmina excused herself - she had to go to her tutors and start her afternoon's lessons. King Nico watched, with wonder as his eldest daughter walked out the door. When the sound of her footsteps faded, the Queen Mother asked King Nico what he was thinking. All he would say is "She is everything I could ever ask for and I am so blessed." With that, he hurried away.Soon after (he had to bully his council a bit), there was a Royal feast where the heir to the kingdom was to be announced. Everybody showed up, and the people of the Kingdom waited in the square, enjoying their own festivities. When the clock struck two, King Nico stood. The room became hushed, as everybody waited to hear who would be his heir. King Nico smiled, and then said "I would like everybody to meet my heir, the Crown Princess Yasmina!" After a moment of stunned silence, the room erupted in cheers. Most of the advisers were stunned at the reaction. However, Princess Yasmina already had a reputation as a contentious, talented, smart, and moral young women. She was everything that was needed in a good ruler, and the people knew that (plus, the King's siblings were secretly relieved to not be giving up any of their children, as they knew that they weren't as well suited to become the future ruler). That night, Queen Shula sat in her room crying. When King Nico entered and saw the Queen in such a state, he became instantly worried. When he asked what the matter was, she beamed up at him and told him that everything was perfect. She was relieved that she wouldn't have to leave him, as she loved him dearly. She was also pleased that her daughter was to become Queen and rule in her own right - something that would never happen in her homeland.
