In the Kingdom of Caranenth
The Journal of King Laurent of Caraneth
Twelve long years has passed my friends, years in which peace has prospered in my kingdom, crops have been plentiful, and a calm has finally fallen over all of Caraneth. We have all been waiting on baited breath for an attack to come, or for the plague to return, but it seems that, perhaps, these happenings are truly in the past.
These years have witnessed the growth of my family, as all of my siblings have now married and have families of their own. None rejoice more in our children than my Mother who travels around our homes constantly, not wishing to miss more than a moment of their youths.
I myself am now the proud father of four beautiful daughters, but alas, I have no son. Manon's birth was a complicated delivery and my darling Bella was almost killed. Thank the gods she survived, but the healers have told us that she can bear no more children. For a King, there can almost be no worse realisation that your beloved is unable to produce an heir to your throne and I find myself now under urgent pressure from the court to find a solution.
My options are limited. Christophe is currently next in line, but alas, the same concerns I had about his ability to rule in his youth have not changed so I am loathe to allow him to rule in my stead. My next option is to name one of my nephews as heir. The natural choice would be the eldest, Concordia's son Orlando, but once again this is not possible as Orlando is destined to rule Oleander after his father. Truly, none of Concordia's sons are eligible as they are all needed in Oleander. I also discount all of Christophe's sons as they all have too much of their father in them. Baptiste's eldest are twins, and one could not separate the two which regrettably discounts both. Edmond married for love, a village girl who worked her in the castle, which unfortunately means that his children are not of pure noble blood so can not rule either.
Another option that was mentioned is that I divorce Bella and remarry a woman who can still produce children, but this is unthinkable to me. I love her truly and can not imagine another woman by my side.
As I refuse to remarry, can not name by eldest brother, or any of my nephew's that leaves truly only one option... I must change Caranthean law to allow my darling Amelie to one day rule. She is an intelligent girl who I know will make a superb Queen, but I fear the reaction of my people at this change in tradition.
My sweet Bella is excited at this prospect, believing truly that this step in allowing the eldest child to rule, regardless of sex, is just a step toward equality in Caraneth. I have spoken to Mother who, as always, said that she will support whatever decision I make, and also told me to write Concordia as this is already the law in Oleander. Concordia urges me to proceed with this course as it was well received in her kingdom. I feel that naming Amelie as my heir is my only true option.
I must take my leave to present this to the court. I will report back as to the reception I receive.

I have just returned from meeting with the court, Bella and Amelie at my side. They had reservations, but after listening to my reason's for coming to this conclusion they have agreed and Amelie has officially been named Crown Princess of Caraneth. She is so overjoyed by this new responsibility and wants to start lessons immediately. I knew my Amelie would make me proud.
Change is in the air in Caraneth, and I feel that it can only benefit future generations.
In life and in death,
Laurent
