King Oliver has finally felt that Prince Bastian had enough years behind him to be able to comfortably take over the throne. He didn't want Bastian to feel as overwhelmed as he did when he took over the throne. With Bastian's youngest now able to be independent, and Meg able to spend the time being the people's queen and the King's right hand, Oliver knew that it was time to hand over the throne.
For the last decade, Oliver has been feeling his health slowly slipping. After another mild stroke, he knew that his reign was over. The former King and Queen have retired to the coastal retreat that they both love, and have been given the honorary title of "Exalted Prince of Eriden" and "Exalted Princess of Eriden" - a title reserved only for rulers who have retired.
Just before King Bastian's coronation, Princess Elizabeth gave birth to a little miracle. After many years and the doctor's telling both Elizabeth and Nioclás that they were infertile, they finally had a pregnancy last more then the first 3 months. At first, Elizabeth kept expecting to miscarry, as she had done so often in the past. But then, three months passed, and then four. Pretty soon she was six months, and then eight months. At 42 weeks, she finally went into labor and delivered a healthy baby boy!
Prince Malachi is a darling little boy with blond hair and bright blue eyes. He looks a lot like his father, but has his mother's mouth and high cheekbones. He's got a loud voice, and loves to use it. However, he seems to be a very content little baby most of the time (that could be because neither parent let him out of their arms for long!).
Just 2 days after Bastian's coronation, Princess Teresia was kidnapped by, of all people, her fiancé Baron Lysander. Exalted Princess Vera is insensible with worry, can not leave her bed, and can barely eat. Exalted Prince Oliver is demanding that his son, King Bastian, pay the ransom immediately and get the Princess returned.
As King Bastian is readying his troops and preparing to pay/rescue his half-sister, he receives a private audience request from his sister-in-law, the Infanta Leocadia. At first, he refuses to take the time to indulge what he sees as a frivolous request, but after her frequently repeated requests, he finally decides to give her 5 minutes.
When the Infanta Leocadia enters his presence, he bluntly lets her know that he doesn't have much time and can only spare five minutes... and this better be worth those five minutes. After hearing the stress and worry in the King's voice, and the menace implied if she was wasting his time, the Infanta takes a deep breath and tells the King that she might have some information about who kidnapped his sister.
Stunned, the King sits down and just stares at his sister-in-law, at a complete loss for words at the moment. With a small gulp, the Infanta continues. She tells the King that there is a secret group that has members in Bryony that has an unknown agenda, but is known to acquire mystical objects through various, and sometimes unseemly, means. The groups exact members and whereabouts are not known. She knows about the group because she was approached before she left the kingdom to marry his brother (and she roundly told them to take their plot and leave her out of it too!).
The King finally recovers enough to call in his spy master. The two of them question the Infanta throughly. When they are done, they are fairly sure that the Royalty of Bryony had nothing to do with the kidnapping attempt, and more then likely had no clue it had happened until the news finally traveled there. They are sure that the Infanta isn't a part of it (but will, of course, keep her under constant surveillance from now on), and will keep the fact that she came to them with this information under wraps. They are also pretty sure that the Princess and the Duke haven't left the kingdom.
With this information, they allow the Infanta to return to her family and call in the Chief of Guard and start planning. After a night and day of almost constant planning, they feel fairly confidant that they know where the Princess and Duke are. They put together two groups.
The first group is the original, and very public, group of troops and ransom that will head to the appropriate meeting place. Exalted Prince Oliver will travel with the group, and Rasmus has agreed to disguise himself and go as King Bastian.
The second group is a small secret group of elite guards, the spy master and King Bastian, and will move quickly and quietly to a small, abandoned estate north of the city.
The second group leaves in the pre-dawn twilight before the first group, and travels quickly to the woods around the estate to wait for the first group to leave. When it is time for the first group to be leaving the city and traveling south to the meeting place, two darkly dressed riders leave the seemingly abandoned estate. Four scouts leave to follow. When one scout returns to tell that they are definitely heading to the first group, they make their move on the abandoned estate.
Inside, the fight off the few guards and find the Princess, the Duke, and the Duke's young sister locked in a room together. The group takes the three of them, and heads home. Guards are then sent to inform the first group, and to secure the estate for further investigation.
The Princess informs her bother that the Duke didn't do anything to her. She found him crying out in the woods. He told her about his sister, and she was going to come tell you. However, the villains came out and attacked them. The Duke fought to protect the Princess and was able to let her escape. However, he was then knocked out. The villains then shouted that if the Princess didn't return, that they would have no reason to keep either the Duke or his sister alive. Hearing this from her hiding place, the Princess felt no choice but to return. They were thrown into the room with the Duke's sister, and treated roughly, but not manhandled.
With this story come to light, the King had his spy master check into the Duke and his family. When everything came back clean, the Princess was allowed to marry her Duke, and things started to look "happily ever after".
