------DFiancée: Maria Rafaela, Marchioness of Verbena (14)Royal House: CourfeyracKingdom: UmbreseyAt long last, the kingdoms of Umbresey and Ceylaria celebrated the birth of a royal prince. Seven years ago, Sofia gave birth to a healthy son, dispelling any rumors of an ill-fated marriage. Thaddeus gave the boy the name Christian, after his grandfather. Christian is second in line to the throne of Ceylaria and will inherit the title of Crown Prince once Thaddeus becomes king there. Not long afterwards, Gabriel and Amandine had their second child, a daughter whom they named Liliane. Although her father is of royal birth, and her mother was bestowed the rank of duchess, she herself is not of the nobility. Thus, like her older brother Pierre, she is allowed a courtesy title and will be addressed as Lady Liliane. The family live on a vast estate in the scenic province of Valhurst.Prince James and his wife Alessandra, however, have not been so fortunate. After over a decade of marriage, they still remained childless. Finally the doctors struck a devastating blow: Alessandra was unable to have children. As the crown prince of Umbresey, James was left especially vulnerable by this news. There were calls for William to bypass his eldest son and make Prince Pascal the heir to the throne. Otherwise, they argued, Sofia's son Christian would inherit the crowns of both Umbresey and Ceylaria, making him far too powerful for their liking. William has not yet come to a decision about the matter. These woes boded badly for the king's youngest children. No other royal family wanted to be associated with the tainted Courfeyrac dynasty. Because of this, William was unable to arrange ideal marriages for his youngest daughters, the princesses Isabel and Matilda. Isabel married George Carlisle, the marquess of Dunlin. Through this marriage she became a marquess, though she still retains the title Duchess of Ukiah which she was given at birth. Together Isabel and George have twin sons, Philip and William, who are named for their grandparents. Isabel is very happy with her husband, but she still longs for the comforts of a royal lifestyle.Matilda married even farther below herself than did her sister. Owing to her ill health and less-than-ideal family situation, no young man of noble birth would even consider her. In the end, she wound up marrying Johannes Laurent, an earl who was over twenty years her senior. Johannes is an unabashed womanizer and has been his whole life: he has a number of illegitimate children, some of whom are almost Matilda's age. He makes no secret of his extramarital affairs. The only happiness Matilda derives from her marriage is the joy that her twin daughters, Helena and Katharina, bring her. Fortunately, they are both of perfect health. Not all news is bad news, however. The youngest Courfeyrac royal, Prince Pascal, is engaged. His fiancée is Maria Stravis, whose father is the duke of Tyrian and marquess of Verbena. Because she is the duke's only child, she was given the title of Marquess of Verbena by courtesy. Pascal does not care that his fiancée is not of royal birth -- or even of noble birth, for that matter. The couple have decided to wait a few years to get married, since Maria is still fairly young.
