It took a year for Queen Oriana to get her strength back from her pregnancy with princess Lys. During that time, King Oliver started chasing down some of the loose ends of the plot. He didn't come close to finding anybody involved that actually had any sort of access to the castle, but he was slowly gathering more information. And then, Queen Oriana found herself pregnant again, even with the doctors medicines to prevent pregnancy!
Everything flew into a tizzy. Oriana started bleeding early on in the pregnancy, and lost strength rapidly. She struggled to spend time everyday with Bastian and Lys. However, Bastian's nurse often found conflicts that prevented the Queen from being with her son.
Queen Oriana plotted with her husband, to prepare for the worst. She even picked out her replacement. Vera was chosen because she spent half her life under King Oliver's rule, was of a family that had strong political ties (although she was a younger daughter), and was of a personality that Queen Oriana thought would benefit Oliver, her children and the kingdom. This was only between husband and wife, and was unknown to anybody else within the kingdom.
While his queen wasted away, King Oliver worked upon the plot within his own kingdom. He knew that his family wasn't safe while this subterfuge remained. He crept along, piece by piece, until he finally caught his big break. He captured somebody who had contact within the castle!
Queen Oriana was 8 months pregnant, and some of her doctors were wanting to bring the baby early in hopes of preventing drastic complications. King Oliver told the doctors that they would need to wait until tomorrow because he had some urgent business that day. He then met with his spy master and head guard to lay the trap to catch the insider.
Unfortunately, King Oliver had to spend his time out of touch with the castle that evening if the plan was to work. At dawn, the trap closed. Inside was Crown Prince Bastian's nurse! King Oliver left the nurse in the care of his spy master and raced back to the castle. He arrived in time to see one of the minor doctors giving his wife a dose of some medicine. King Oliver's eyes met his wife's, and then her eyes rolled up and she quit breathing.
Crying out, King Oliver summoned both the guard and the doctors. The minor doctor was taken away, liberally bruised and with a number of cracked ribs, while the other doctors worked on saving the infant. King Oliver was kicked out of the room, being told that he needed to remember his queen as she was alive, and not as she was while they worked to save his child...
Princess Susanne was cut from her mother within minutes. The poison that shut down her mother's life never made it into her blood. King Oliver found it bittersweet that his youngest daughter looked exactly like his lost queen. King Oliver mourned, as did the whole of the kingdom... Queen Oriana was much beloved.
Oliver poured himself into uncovering the plot that now seemed to suffocate his kingdom. Both nurse and doctor were thoroughly interrogated before being hung. Many more operatives were found, including some very minor nobles. And then, the leads ran out...
With his wife a year in the grave, King Oliver's court started to try and pressure him into remarrying "for the good of the kingdom". However, Oliver was still very bitter over losing his wife, and couldn't bare the thought of taking another. For another year, he simply refused to consider the matter.
Then, at a ball, he met Vera while outside walking the gardens. She was quiet, but vivacious at the same time. She was petite, with dark brown hair and eyes, and almost almond colored skin. She looked somewhat plain and reserved, but had a sparkle to her eyes and a lively wit. She was nothing like his golden Oriana, but everything like her!
The next day, he announced to his court that he would take a new queen, but only if the Lady Ferdinanda Verena Sieglinde would consent to be his wife. To say that everybody was flabbergasted would be an understatement! And Lady Vera was the most stunned of everybody. A shocked yes was given in reply, and the kingdom got ready for a royal wedding.
On the whole, the kingdom didn't have a set opinion of their new queen yet. There were some snide remarks made about the age difference (although not many paid attention to these as the age difference was quite little compared to other noble marriages!), but on the whole, people just didn't know enough about Queen Vera yet to like her. She didn't sparkle as their old queen, and, therefore, wasn't instantly loved.
However, as she quietly tamed the brat that Crown Prince Bastian had turned into under his former nurses care, the kingdom slowly started to admire her. When she gave birth to her first born, and insisted upon honoring her former queen in his name, they started to love her... just as Oliver had loved her from the moment he decided to marry her.
If you are reading this and have any comments (even if it is just to say that you are enjoying it, or hate it!), please let me know :-)
I can't really consider it a story, but I feel like it is the bare bones of a story, and would love to hear what others thing... Thanks!
