King Robert and Queen Dorothea were both thrilled when the queen found herself with child again - something they hadn't thought possible. She seemed much better during the pregnancy than she had while pregnant with Xander, and they thought that whatever had caused the queen to be so very ill during her last pregnancy was gone. While another son would be an asset to an already-strong line, both the king and queen secretly hoped for a daughter this time, a little girl.
While they got their wish - the queen birthed a healthy daughter - more complications arose and this time the queen wasn't strong enough to fight back. Queen Dorothea succumbed to blood loss, leaving a distraught, heartbroken King Robert to raise two small boys and a newborn daughter - whom he named Anne, after her mother.
King Robert's advisors would not stop insisting that for the good of Westergate he would have to take another wife. While he was devastated over the loss of the queen, he realized that they were right; his children needed a mother, and his kingdom needed a queen. He married a young princess, Kira, from a nearby realm who was a good ally for Westergate. She was a sweet woman, and she was kind to his children, but the marriage was one of convenience. He still missed Dorothea terribly, and his first daughter with Kira was named after her, just as Anne had been.
