"Gee," remarked Sarah one day to Wheeler, as both of them sat in rocking chairs on the porch observing the California sunset, "sure is lucky you found that oil when you were out huntin' in Texas! Otherwise we'd never be able t'afford so many yongins!"
"Yup," said Wheeler, after several seconds. The straw he was chewing on dropped from his mouth, and he leaned down to retreive it.
"I wouldn't be in all them newspapers, either," Sarah added after a long while. They were southerners and they talked slowly.
"No ma'am, you sure wouldn't."
More long seconds passed. Wheeler swatted a mosquito and wiped his hand on his overalls.
"I might be done havin' children, Wheeler," Sarah said, peering over at Wheeler beside her.
"All right."
"At least fer a coupla years."
"Well, that's fine with me, sugar angel."
"Thank you, darlin'," Sarah said, and turned back to the sunset.
Wheeler closed his eyes. Sure was nice out here. Cooler'n Texas sometimes, that's fer sure. A mosquito whinnied in his ear and zoomed away.
"You smell smoke?" Sarah asked.
Wheeler sniffed. No, not really - oh, a little bit. Faint. "Yeah," he said.
"You think somethin's burnin'?"
Wheeler thought. Would it smell like smoke if nothin' was burnin'? "I don't know, Sallie, probably so."
"You think I should go check?"
"Whatever pleases you, darlin', I'm trynna take me a nap."
Sarah stood up and brushed her apron off. "Kids!" she called.
"It's probably that littl'un," Wheeler called after her. "That littl'un. Ffuh. Freddy or whichever."
"You think it's Frank?"
"Is that the one who's always runnin' around tyin' pigs t' trees an', an', stuff like that?"
"You mean is he mischievous?"
"Yeah, mischievous."
"No, honey, I think that's Bill."
"Oh, yeah, Bill," said Wheeler.
"Bill!" called Sarah, running in the house.
"And Bill's my oldest son, too!" Wheeler remembered, frowning. "Little varmint." He swatted another mosquito and closed his eyes.
