It was another three years before William and Aurelia had another child. At one point, the king actually considered amending the Umbresian constitution to allow females to inherit the Crown, so that the throne might stay within the control of the Courfeyrac family through his daughter Sofia. These plans were quickly scrapped when the queen gave birth to a healthy son. William named him James, after his father. The whole kingdom celebrated the arrival of the Crown Prince with a lavish parade and feast. When James assumes the Crown after William, he will be known as King James IX.
But not all was well in the royal family. Aurelia suffered through some complications during her pregnancy and after the birth. Doctors confirmed that she would not be able to have any more children after James. Of course, William was devastated. The rivaling nobility, however, were delighted. If William were to divorce Aurelia, or if Aurelia were to succumb to her ill health, the king would be looking for a new wife. The Umbresian dukes and earls with daughters of marrying age quickly began jockeying for favorable positions within the royal court. So far, however, the king has given no indication that he intends to remarry any time soon.
