A lot has happened for the Lindgren family in the past five years. Erik Sr. passed away from a heart attack in 1938, at the age of 60. The family is still getting over the loss of their father and grandfather, and Erik Sr. played a big part in the lives of his kids and grandkids. He will be greatly missed by the family. Ylva is getting on as best she can. She has sole custody of Karin's son Jonny, and is raising him with the help of Johan and his family.

Taras never returned to Karin and the kids, so Karin told her children that he died in 1936. Karin and Vira sought treatment in Philadelphia for their tuberculosis until mid-1937. Vira's infection became active, and she died two months later. Karin was devastated. She returned to her parents' household after Vira's death. Unfortunately, Karin passed away in 1939 after a long, unidentified illness. Jonny is ten now, and the only member of the Kaminski family who survives. He is being raised primarily by Ylva, but also considers himself a part of Johan's family. Jonny is a rather morose child who doesn't smile often--but it's no wonder, almost everyone he's ever considered family has died.

Rike and Matthew's children are growing up and moving out. Their eldest son, Matt Jr. is in his second year of college, studying biology and chemistry. Charlie just married his high school sweetheart, Violet. She works at a local convenience store, and he works at a factory nearby. Rike is excited at the prospect of grandchildren! Lizbeth has plans to go to nursing school in the fall, and she is also dating her high school sweetheart Richard Morris (who plans to become a businessman and is going to business college). The other kids are growing up fast, and have a bunch of varied interests. Rike and Matthew are excited for their futures.

Andy and Minnie are doing well, and they have since had two more daughters--Leila and Sharon. Minnie's son Sam is working in the shipping business. He is engaged to a local girl named Henrietta Porter.

Johan and Mary have not had any more children, but they are doing well. Johan hired a local man to help him and Jorgen with the furniture business in 1938.

Jorgen and his family moved back to Oregon in 1936, after hearing about Kata's death and the poor state of Karin and Vira's health. Jorgen returned to work at the furniture business and is glad that he is able to be with his family through the rough time that they have gone through in the past few years. He and his wife Hanne now have six children and are expecting a seventh in a few months.

Sven's medical practice is doing pretty well, and he is much sought after. He married just last year to a girl six years his junior, but the two of them seem very happy together. They just announced that they are expecting a baby!

Freja and Thomas have been married for five years now. Unfortunately, they have not been able to have children. Their first child was stillborn (1937), and Freja has suffered two miscarriages since then (1938 and 1940). She and Thomas want desperately to have children, but they will just have to wait and see.

Kristin and her three children are doing well. Kristin has not found another man to be her husband, though she is thinking about doing so. Kristin works hard as a schoolteacher and a seamstress and has settled down a lot in the past few years.
