Emma's father Arthur Wilcox Holmes passed away in 1908 leaving a substantial sum of money to the struggle priest & his wife. With the inheritance Shepherd & Emma decided to send their eldest son, Shepherd Jr to England to get an education at a prestigious boarding school, in the hopes he would be able to get a job in the Foreign Office or follow in his father footsteps as a priest. The rest of the children attend the local parish school, at which Emma is one of the teachers, and Shepherd is the attached priest, although Shepherd is more often assisting the Bishop in the discharge of his duties.
