It is now 1935. What happened in 1931:
Edward is doing well, and helping out Adam with the newspaper. He keeps up with the poor economic status of the country and publishes opinion articles and reactions to the Depression. Adam and Samantha are doing all right too. Adam makes an okay living with the newspaper, but he really doesn't have time to do anything else. Samantha and the kids are creative and find all sorts of ways to conserve money. Mary, Eddy, Joey, and Stephen have taken over the Ash Hill paper route, and they do it for free so that their dad and grandfather don't have to worry about paying people to do it. Ben and Rebecca welcomed a third daughter, however, she became very ill and passed away within a matter of days. Lottie and Carrie were upset by the loss of their new sister, but are getting on better now. Ben and Rebecca, however, were devastated by the loss. Fortunately, the farm is still doing well and they are making enough money to make ends meet. Mike and his long-time girlfriend Nellie Fisher were married this past year. Mike doesn't have a lot to offer, but the pair wants to be together. Henry and Summer are enjoying raising their son Henry Jr. Hope and Henry Evans were married in the spring and are expecting their first child together. Charlie loves having a daddy, and Henry is great for both Charlie and Hope. Stephen is still living at home with Edward, on the bachelor pad. He has a girlfriend at school, and the two are way more serious than two high schoolers have a right to be. Edward worries about them, but doesn't really want to interfere. What happened in 1932:
Nothing significant happened in 1932 for Adam and Samantha's family.
Nothing significant happened in 1932 for Ben and Rebecca's family.
Mike and Nellie are very happy together. Mike has one year left before he'll be able to open up his own practice. Nellie has been going to nurse's school and plans to assist her husband when he opens up his own practice. Mike is hoping to find a New York suburb and practice there, but he isn't sure whether or not he'll be able to make a living.
Henry and Summer had a daughter. Summer had a difficult pregnancy and delivery, and has not fully recovered yet. Henry worries that something else is wrong with her.
Hope and Henry have had their first child together. Jonathan Edward Evans was born on February 6, 1932. It was a huge surprise to Hope then, that she became pregnant again and gave birth to Victoria Louise on December 11, 1932. Henry isn't sure how he'll provide for his rapidly growing family, but figures they'll manage somehow. Henry works at a local mill and does some fine carpentry on the side.
Stephen really found himself in a jam this past year. His girlfriend, Anna became pregnant. Stephen's son Jack was born on March 31, 1932. Unfortunately, his delivery caused a massive hemmorrage in Anna and she died shortly after his birth. Stephen was very upset that Anna died, but unsure about what to do with Jack. Anna's parents didn't want him, but Stephen doesn't think he can care for an infant either. He decided to give his son to Ben and Rebecca to raise, since they lost a baby in 1931. What happened in 1933:
Edward is now living by himself. He makes frequent trips to see all of his children and grandchildren, however, and still has connections within the police department. There is talk of making Edward the police chief of Ash Hill, but Edward isn't sure he wants that responsibility. Adam and Samantha's children are growing up fast, but nothing significant happened in their family. Ben and Rebecca were happy to take Jack in, and the girls love having a new little brother. Rebecca suffered a miscarriage in the middle of the year, and having baby Jack around to take care of helped her and Ben through their loss. Mike and Nellie had a little girl of their own. She is healthy and happy, and the couple enjoy being parents just as much as they enjoy working in the medical field. Summer has fully recovered from Jessie's birth, and has vowed that she will not go through another pregnancy. Henry really wants more children, but is afraid to go against Summer's wishes. Hope and Henry have their hands full with two toddlers in the house. Charlie is a great help, but he gets into mischief as well. Stephen, as promised, went into the US Army the day he turned eighteen. He has been in boot camp for the past month and really likes his new structured military life--not to mention that he doesn't have to worry about being paid. What happened in 1934:
Hope and Henry welcome a fourth child--a daughter they name Elsie June. The rest of the family is struggling to get through the Depression, but don't worry too much since they can all support each other. What happened in 1935:
1935 was a busy year for the Halloway family. Edward was elected police chief of Ash Hill after over a decade out of service. Adam and Samantha were immensely surprised to find that Samantha was expecting a baby. About midway through the pregnancy, Samantha found out that she was carrying more than one baby. Triplets! The babies were born nearly a month and a half early, but they all pulled through and are now thriving. The older kids are excited to have more siblings, but Mary was kind of hoping that there would be no more surprise babies in the family. After all, she and her boyfriend Mitchell Brady are hoping to get married within the next year or so. Rebecca's sister and her husband died in an influenza epidemic in their Texas town. Their two surviving children were sent up to Rebecca and Ben so that they could care for the youngsters. Brandon and Zach are very distraught over the deaths of their parents and four siblings, but they are trying their best to fit in with their new family. Mike and Nellie's daughter Lizzy passed away. She wandered away from Nellie while she was shopping and fell into a stream created by recent rains and drowned. Mike and Nellie were devastated, Nellie especially because she feels that the whole thing is her fault. Mike and Nellie have moved back to Ash Hill and are living with Edward until they can find quarters of their own. Mike is working with the doctor in Ash Hill and trying to convince Nellie to do the same. Henry and Summer found out that they were going to have another baby. Summer didn't want another child, but persevered because Henry was so excited about another child. In her 8th month, Summer fell down a set of stairs and went into premature labor. The baby boy survived, but Summer feels very badly for wishing the child away, since it almost happened. Hope and Henry have continued to have children. This year, they welcomed twin girls. The other kids like the babies, but Charlie complains that they're too similar. Stephen is still in the Army, and is currently in Washington, DC to help protect the people there from the homeless who are desperate to survive.
