It is now 1930.
Jack is still working away on the farm. The stock market crash of 1929 hasn't affected them too much, since Jack and Marie always tried to save a bit each month.
In 1928, Jonny and Angelina welcomed their first child together. Jonny has written three more books. Rusty, now nine, is a rambunctious young boy who loves to be outside. He has a special affinity for frogs.
Jamie and Elise have had two more children. Their son was born in 1927, and a second daughter in 1929. Jamie's cow farm has run into a bit of trouble. The vendors no longer want to pay full price for the cattle and milk that they receive. The cuts have severely cut back on Jamie and Elise's rather free lifestyle. They now conserve as much as they can and make do with what they can't get.
Ben has been doing well in the shipping business. He still has not married, and Marie thinks that he will likely be single for life. Ben likes to make people laugh, still, and he recently started showing up at a restaurant in Philadelphia and doing comedic impressions and telling jokes and funny stories. The people like him, and Ben is thankful for the extra source of income--most of which he sends home to Jack and Marie to spend as they see fit.
Rachel and David have probably been hit the hardest by the market collapse so far. David works full time as a doctor, but most of his patients can't pay him or can't pay full price. He decided to practice in Williamsburg, VA, so Rachel, David, and their (now) seven children scrape by as best they can without any support from family (who are mostly in Indiana, except Ben).
Bobby and Dorothy were married in 1927, after they had both graduated from music school. They opened up a music school of their own and were pretty successful giving violin, piano, flute, guitar, and harp lessons to children in St. Louis. They had their first child in 1928, and another just recently. With the stock market crash, Bobby and Dorothy are barely scraping by, but they are happy together.
Charlie is working on the farm with Jack. He does support himself however, because Jack allows him to take half of the earnings provided he puts in at least half the work. Against all odds, Charlie fell in love with one of the local girls from town. He and Katie were married in 1927. In 1928, Katie became pregnant. Late in 1928, she went into labor. Unfortunately, the babies she was carrying were in the wrong position. The doctor was not able to save her. Charlie grew very bitter and withdrawn when Katie died--and left him twins to care for. In the two years that have passed, Charlie is still very much hurt that Katie died, but he is growing to love his babies very much. Marie takes care of them during the day while Charlie works in the fields with Jack.
Stephen spent a year at teacher's college before the stock market collapsed, and the Fields' could no longer afford to send him. Instead, Stephen has now taken up charity work in New York City helping those devastated by the collapse, mostly the children. He has met a young lady doing charity work as well--Betty Stanley. Stephen hasn't said as much, but Marie guesses that he has feelings for her.
Lizzy is seventeen. She loves having Charlie's children Zach and Mary to play with and look after. She has a steady boyfriend, David Louis Cummings. Lizzy and David plan to get married next year, when they both turn eighteen.
Joey is fifteen. He too likes having Zach and Mary around all the time. He and Jonny's son Rusty have bonded pretty closely. Joey is all boy. He doesn't sit still for long and always likes to be busy doing something. He is very handy and can fix just about anything, even at his young age.
