Matt has begun going to night school in hopes of getting a respectible and steady job for he and his family. He and Jennifer fret over money- they barely have enough to pay the rent, let alone take care of their now two children, Io and Abe.
Luckily, the Mistress of the house, an old woman named Mary Jane Younge, has taken a shine to Jen and her children. She's teaching Jenny to sew while her spinster daughter, Maria, takes care of the children. Hopefully, with time, Jen's talent will develop and she'll be able to help support the family with her trade.

It is 1905.
In late 1901, Jack and Marie welcomed a second little boy, and in 1902 they welcomed a third. In 1904, they had their first daughter. Thankfully, all of their children were born healthy, and Marie didn't get too sick during pregnancy. The farm is doing well. Jack has recently hired a young man named Isaac to help him with all the chores and in the fields. Isaac is a vagabond, and he had been wandering around alone for awhile before Jack ran into him in town. Isaac is 19, and he is currently living in the barn. In the spring, Jack is hoping to help him build a lean-to on the far side of the property. Isaac is very thankful to Jack for hiring him, and he is hoping to save up enough money to put a down payment on a vacant land adjoining the Fields' property.
Marie is very busy taking care of the children, but its what she enjoys, and she likes nurturing her little ones.
Little Jonny is now five years old. He loves helping Jack do the farm chores, and he looks up to Isaac like an idol. Jonny is very outgoing, and he likes talking to everybody in town when Marie takes shopping trips.
Jamie is four. He is a rambunctious little troublemaker with a charming smile. He enjoys keeping busy and is especially intrigued by the cows and horses that the family owns.
Benny is three. He is also a bit wild, but not nearly so much as his two older brothers. Benny loves to smile and make people laugh, especially Jack, whom he looks up to tremendously.
Rachel is one. She is the baby of the family, for now. She is giggly and happy. She already toddles around after her big brothers and adores the attention of her parents and Isaac.

In the five years that have passed since the birth of their first child Arthur and Edith have welcomed five more children. The twins arrived only 13 months after Charlie’s birth. Essie and Ned were followed by Oscar almost two years later. Martha arrived in May 1904 only 10 months after Oscar was born. Finally Ada entered the world on Halloween 1905.
Since marrying Edith has become a homemaker and she has her hands full with caring for the children and taking care of the home. The Washington family has grown a lot and with six children under the age of six it can be quite a handful. However; Arthur’s sister Dolly has moved in with the family to help out. She has been a great support for the entire family, but especially for Edith.
Arthur Washington supports the family by working as a lawyer at a local law firm. He made partner in 1904 and is well on his way to become a very import person within the law community.
Although Edith and Arthur already have six children they are planning to have more children, however; they want to wait a few years before adding any more members to the family...

A year later they had another girl, Grace (who wasn't exactly planned, but the family was still nevertheless overjoyed at her birth). The arrival of Charlie in 1905 rounded out the half-decade for the Ballacks.
