It is 1935. The horrible depression has lasted for six years now, and it only seems to be getting worse, despite a recent upturn of the economy.
Robert's law firm went out of business in 1933. He and Lisbeth are still living on their savings, but they're scrimping and saving as much as they can. Robert has been getting involved with politics lately, trying to help find a legal solution to bring more money into circulation and encourage people to invest and spend what money they do have. Lisbeth and the local women have been pooling their resources and trying to make life better for everyone in the town by sharing everyone's goods.

Dorothy and John Davis don't write much--paper is scarce, but the Norths did learn that they added a little girl to their family in 1932.

Julia and Stephen Brown continue to work their farm. They never have much to spare, but do trade the food they grow for necessities like shoes and coats. They also had two more boys, Lenny and Zach. Their other kids are all growing up. Millie is thirteen now. She is growing into quite the young woman--always helpful, and she has an eye for a bargain. Stevie and Henry are twelve. Along with Abe, they help Stephen run the farm and do all the little errands he needs done. Beth is nine. She is a quiet girl who likes to read. She is always over at the library getting a new book. Peter is eight. He tags along with his older brothers, though now, with two younger brothers, he counts himself their leader. Jessa is six. Julia is teaching her how to read and do arithmetic.

Edward and Rose had their first child in 1932. Mary was born healthy, but got an infection soon after birth and passed away early in 1933. Also in 1933, Edward's congregation informed him that they could no longer pay him a salary. Without any source of income, Edward and Rose lost their home. They are currently staying with Rose's parents, and Edward is was just hired to work in a factory making radios. He and Rose also just welcomed another daughter, who seems very healthy.

Charlie is still in the Navy, though he is stationed at a naval base in New Orleans now. In 1933, he married a girl from there, Louisa Josephine. Louisa's family is from Mexico, and her father and brothers are dockworkers. Charlie and Louisa have a small apartment. They just welcomed a little boy, named Andrew Francisco.

Mary has not married yet. She is dating, however. Her boyfriend, Willis Maynard, is from a wealthy family, and he is going to medical school. He has one year left, then he hopes to find a job and ask Mary to marry him. Mary found a teaching position in 1935, but it required her to move to New York City. Robert and Lisbeth weren't so sure a big city was best for their daughter, but Mary wanted a job and to be able to support herself, so they let her go.
