It is 1920. The kids have all been growing older. In 1917, Lisbeth was surprised to find that she was expecting. She and Robert had thought themselves to be done with children. Later in that year, their second daughter was born. However, she was stillborn. Still, they decided to name her Anna Rose North, since she was nearly full term. Doctors aren't sure what caused Anna to be stillborn. Lisbeth was sad that Anna was stillborn, but somewhat relieved that she wouldn't have to go through raising another child.
In 1919, Robert successfully created an Illinois headquarters for his law firm. After much discussion with Lisbeth, he decided that it would be best to remain in Decatur. After all, the family was settled there, and both Bobby and Julia were courting. Bobby, 20, is courting a young girl whose family moved to Decatur when she was fifteen. She is two years younger than Bobby, but the pair seems to get along well. Julia too is courting. Her beau is local farmer. Lisbeth is a little disappointed that she didn't want to marry higher up on the social ladder, but Julia's beau is a nice young man from a good, moral family. The other kids are growing up too. Edward and Charlie are finishing up their schooling. Edward intends to become a preacher, while Charlie hopes to enlist in the Navy or the Marines. Mary is a carefree girl of eleven. She enjoys being outside and is especially fond of the new flower garden Robert put in last year.
