During the war, there was an outbreak of influenza. Everyone caught it. Luckily, most of them lived, but Nathan didn't recover and died.
Cecilia went to Europe with her two oldest daughters to work as a nurse. Eventually, In Poland, they found Florian, an orphaned boy. Florian's mother died giving birth to him, and his father was murdered. Cecilia took him home with them.
Soon after the war, Chloe fell in love with a veteran. They married a few months later. In 1920, she gave birth to a son, Henry Jack. At 36, Cecilia felt she was too young to be a grandmother, but she dealt with it.
When Chloe and Lucille came home one day wearing much shorter skirts than what was worn in the past, their parents were scandalized. They were told to cover up. Eventually, all the women in the family got used to it and stopped wearing floor-length dresses.
As for the alcohol ban, the family didn't drink, except for Walter, who drank once in a blue moon.
