After John witnessed a fellow employee in the process of embezzling money from the company they work for, he began to receive anonymous and frightening phone calls, as well as e-mails, threatening the well-being of him and his family. The government intervened when the company went to trial, in order to protect the family. The children didn't understand what was going on, so it was far more nerve-wracking for John and Elisabeth, who managed to cope rather well under the circumstances.
