James’s older brother died in a car crash. Do you adopt his ten-year old daughter?
James and Grace's niece, Natalie, always loved to come to their house to play with her cousins. Carrie and Livie enjoyed her company in games, and Natalie adored little Lainey, as she called Madeleine. So, it wasn't unusual when James' brother and his wife, asked if they'd mind watching her one night while they went to dinner and a movie.
Late that night, after the kids were in bed, the phone rang. Thinking it was his sister-in-law, calling to check on her daughter, James answered, but the voice on the other end was not one he recognized. The gentleman identified himself as a doctor from the local hospital and notified James that his brother and sister-in-law had been in a terrible accident. His sister-in-law had been killed instantly, and his brother was in critical condition.
When he hung up the phone, he and Grace decided not to wake Natalie, hoping for the best and wanting to protect her from the news for the time being. James went to the hospital, where he saw his big brother for the last time. As he sat by the bedside, he promised he'd take care of Natalie and love her like his own daughter. Shortly thereafter, his brother succumbed to his injuries, and James made his way home, dreading making that phone call to Grace.
At home, Natalie was awakened by the ring of the telephone, and she made her way to her aunt's side. Grace was completely shaken by James' call and didn't notice her young niece come into the room. When she finally realized the little girl was there, Natalie had asked if it was her parents who had called. Knowing she couldn't keep the news away from Natalie forever, she told her there'd been a terrible accident and that her parents were in heaven. As she expected, Natalie was overcome by shock and burst into tears, and all Grace could do was hold her little niece close, promising that her parents would always watch over her.
James arrived home at that moment and found Grace attempting to comfort Natalie. He came to their side, where he knelt in front of Natalie and took her in his arms. As she sobbed, he told her how much her parents loved her, and as she calmed slightly, she was able to ask where she would go. Looking at Grace and then at Natalie, he told her she wouldn't have to go anywhere - that they would take care of her and love her, just as much as John, Carrie, Livie, Xander, and Lainey. With that, Natalie gave James a hug, and settled into Grace's arms, where she was able to finally drift off to sleep. Grace dried the tears from her face, and she and James looked at each other, knowing there would be difficult days ahead, but that Natalie would cope with the loss of her parents, feeling safe, secure, and loved by them.
