They were not trying to have another child (8 was a handful already). And even more to their surprise...it was another set of twins! This time they wanted to know the sex of the twins and were really hoping for at least one little boy. They wanted one so desperately, but once again Bailey was carrying twin girls. At least they had enough hand-me-downs from their eight previous girls for their new arrivals. Bailey and Bill had decided on the names Meredith Kay and Karen Mae...Meredith Kay had come from the names of Bill's two grandmothers and Karen Mae from Bailey's.About five months into the pregnancy, panic arose in the Smith household. Bailey started convulsing in her bed. Bill called 911 and somehow managed to call his mother to watch the girls. The ambulance took Bill & Bailey over to the St. Marys hospital where Bailey was diagnosed with eclampsia...a very serious condition in a pregnancy. The twins would have to be delivered as soon as Bailey was stable in order to ensure the mother's survival. That entire night Bill paced the floor of the waiting room praying (he wasn't allowed to be with Bailey as she was in critical condition). He was terrified of losing his beloved wife of 13 years. At 3 in the morning a doctor appeared and told Bill that Bailey was stable and that they were going to induce labor. If in 12 hours the twins were not delivered naturally, he would have to perform an emergency c-section. But in the meantime, the doctor would let Bill break the visitation rules to go see his wife. When Bill walked in the door of Bailey's room all the emotion he had kept pent up broke loose in a flood of tears. Bailey was asleep with a breathing tube down her throat. She looked so weak, fragile, and pale. Bill sat on the chair next to her and took her hand in his rubbing his thumb along the back of her hand. "We're going to make it through this, darling", he whispered. He leaned forward and kissed her on her forehead. Ten and a half hours later, there were still no labor pains and the doctor began making the necessary preparations to go through with the emergency c-section. Five minutes before the c-section was to take place, Bailey started with the labor pains. They were coming very close together, so the doctor knew she would give birth within the next two hours. He also knew that this rapid progress of labor pains would take a huge toll on the mother (already weak), so he began praying himself that he would be able to save all three in danger. Only a short hour later the first baby was delivered. She weighed only three pounds, five ounces but was breathing normal. The nurses immediately took her out of the delivery room to the NICU for the proper care for a pre-mature baby. Bill could not believe how tiny his daughter was and began to worry for her survival. Fifteen minutes later the second baby was delivered, but there was no cry. Bill immediately flashbacked to the birth of Amelia and how she didn't breathe at her birth and almost didn't survive. The doctor and nurses were gathered around the child trying everything in their power to get her to breathe. Bailey looked at Bill with tear-filled eyes and whispered "I'm sorry." "It's not your fault, babe," he replied. He held her hand as they sat their in an agonizing wait. They were each praying silently. After what seemed like an eternity, the doctor walked away from the infant. "We have tried everything possible to revive the little one. I'm sorry but she's gone," he said. One of the nurses brought the child over and placed her in Bill's arms. Bailey was too shocked to react. She just stared blankly at the little baby. Bill looked down at his precious baby. "Please, God, no. Not her. Not our little girl. No." A tear fell off his cheek onto his baby's head. Then a miracle of all miracles...her chest heaved. She was breathing! "Doctor, she's alive!" Bill cried. The doctor smiled and whispered a thank you to the Great Doctor.Bill and Bailey after the ordeal chose different names for their girls than what they originally intended. The first girl was named Hannah Faith. Hannah means "favour" and it was because of God's favour that she was alright; and Faith because they had faith in God to ensure her survival. The second child was named Selah Eve. Selah is a musical term found in scriptures used to denote a pause...and it was in that agonizing pause that her parents awaited the news of her survival; and Eve because it means "to live", "to breathe". It was what happened after that selah that seemed to last forever...God breathed life into her.The twins were both under 4 pounds and it was two months before they could bring the girls home from the hospital. Bailey spent a month in the hospital, too recovering from both the eclampsia and the short period of labor. Bill had his hands full with his job, the eight girls, and visits to the hospital. But he was never more happy than the day he brought his two daughters home to his beautiful wife to complete their family.
