One of the parents gains full custody of a child from a previous relationship after the child's mother/father died. How did the other parent died, how does your family react ro the new child and how does the child react?
(I'm doing this with Magda and Tony, because with Andy and Miriam any child previous to their children would be too old for custody.)
Magda and Tony settled happily into life as parents, despite a rough patch when Holly was a year old: Magda found out that Tony had fathered a child before his relationship with her. She was furious that he was not an active part of Jared's life, and insisted that he help provide for him, no matter how much he disliked Noa, Jared's mother. Tony had been suffering from a severe depression when his son was born, and believed that his son would be better without him; Magda encouraged him to build a relationship with Jared and to be a responsible father.
Three years later, Magda found she was pregnant again and everyone was overjoyed, especially Holly, who was excited about becoming a bog sister. Six months along however, their happiness was touched by tragedy when Noa and Jared were caught in a house fire. Jared was rescued from his bedroom but Noa was overcome by the smoke and eventually died in hospital. When Jared was released from hospital, he went to live with Tony and Magda.
Jared was very traumatised by the fire and the death of his mother, and the changes didn't make anything easier. While he had spent a few days at a time at his father's before, he now had to get used to being part of their family full-time as well as trying to deal with his grief. As a result he became very aggressive, particularly towards Magda who he previously had a good relationship with. He was (and is still) receiving conselling to help him cope, which has helped somewhat, however Magda and Tony are aware that it may take a long time before he gets used to living with them, and that he will always mourn his mother. Holly, as well, reacted badly to the sudden addition of Jared to the household, and she was very resentful of him to begin with. After a couple of months things settled into a routine. Holly became much less resentful, and is very close to Jared now.
When Magda gave birth to a boy they asked Jared if he would mind if the baby was given the middle name Noah, in memory of Noa. Jared agreed, and he and Holly were asked to pick a first name from a list. They chose Isaac. There was a difficult time after Ike was born - things had just begun to settle down from the fire - but the Pearsons are taking each day as it comes.
