I'll add in the information I never managed to work in last time around. So, to start from the beginning!
Meet Raki Hayashi. He is a twenty-five year old nisei, a first-generation Japanese-American, with a bright, bubbling personality and a bad case of the baby-face. A graduate of a culinary school, he's currently working at a little Japanese restaurant with dreams of opening his own place someday.
He's friendly, he's determined, and he's desperately in love with his wife.
Speaking of whom, meet Clare. She's quiet, diligent, and far more reserved than Raki, but beneath a cool exterior lies the heart of a strong and devoted woman. Expect to hear little about her past, a story she guards more carefully than any other, but remain around her long enough, and you will begin to appreciate her subtle smile and the understated way in which she expresses herself.
Clare is an aspiring writer and is a current stay-at-home mother.
And what a handsome little boy she has to stay with! Joel Takumi Hayashi was born on January 23, a beaming bit of hope in the bleak midwinter. He takes after his father's appearance, and thus far his father's demeanor as well--Joel is a happy baby and seems full of smiles.
His nursery is simple: off-white walls, dark furniture, bedding to match the paint, a large window with a windowseat, and a sparing number of toys. Raki was inclined towards a more brightly coloured set-up, perhaps with a theme of animals. However, Clare pointed out that she would be spending more time in there than he, and that she would prefer something that wouldn't give her a headache. He assented but then declared that perhaps he should stay home with the next one, who could have the wild animals themed room.
How two people this different could come together is an interesting story. Raki and Clare met by chance in a park, and he was instantly enchanted by her. Their serendipitous meeting became a friendship, and then a close friendship, and then a tentative blossoming of love. Neither has much in the way of family--both are only children, and Clare is estranged from her parents, while Raki's have both died--and they both feel very lucky to have found family in each other.
