Our best friend John died a week ago after a long, painful battle with cancer. After he learned there was no possibility of getting better, he stipulated on his will that he wanted us to be his sons’ legal guardians. We agreed to it, since it would be the best for them. We’re their godparents, know them very well and they’re good friends with our children, plus we live in the same area. John’s family lives on the other side of the country and the boys have seen them on counted occasions. Contacting their mother was not a possibility; she disappeared without a trace when Jacob was a baby. So when the worst happened, we took Max and Jack home with us. They’re still adjusting and it hasn’t been easy, but we’re making sure they know we’re always here for them.
