The Bartlett family has been busy for five years.
Jack, 45, did not enlist as a medic in WWI, but has been extremely busy helping his assistant, Jacob, to expand the practice. Jacob is moving to Massachusetts to marry his sweetheart and he plans to open up a doctor’s office there. Jack is planning to retire within the next 10 years and have Jonny take over his practice.
Mary, 42, is raising her children to be happy, healthy, and self-sufficient. She is rather nondescript and spends nearly all of her time taking care of her children or someone in town.
Jonny, 20, is away at school studying to become a full-fledged doctor. He has three years left, then will return and work under his father until Jack retires.
Matt, 19, has developed an interest in carpentry and is now pursuing his interest by setting up his own business. He makes furniture, toys, and miscellaneous other objects for his clients. Matt was the first of the Bartlett children to get married. He married his high school sweetheart, Marie Odenton. Marie is now teaching, but the couple is expecting their first child in a few months.
Lily, 17, has really matured over the past few years. She married Joseph Ansel Martin last summer. Joseph is a store owner and owns a mercantile. Joseph, who is 25, was married previously and brings two young children to their marriage. His wife and infant son died in a house fire two years ago. Lily, who bakes desserts for the mercantile is content now to be a mother and helpmate for Joseph. She and Joseph are expecting their first child together next month.
Rube, 16, is working on beginning his own shipping business. He’s very interested in shipping by train and plans to apprentice himself to his uncle, a shipping tycoon in New Orleans next year.
Lizzy, 15, is very beautiful and a very accomplished pianist. She dreams of going to New York and playing for the mayor. She already has a beau, too. His name is Willis Maynard. Willis is 17 and wants to marry Lizzy the moment she turns 18.
Rita, 13, wants to be a veterinarian. She has already done some doctoring on animals and enjoys doing so. She has a colony of cats that she cares for and sells to neighbors when they have kittens.
Lijah, 12, is always on the move. He loves playing outside and is good at drawing. He has big dreams of traveling the world.
Zeke, 10, still loves to explore. Lijah is now his constant companion. He and his brother are both members of the Boy Scouts. Zeke wants to be the next Daniel Boone. He is very clever and is smart.
Paul, 8, is very imaginative. Paul likes to draw. He also loves being with his family. He is sad to see his three oldest siblings not at home anymore, but is beginning to accept it.
