Annie was brutally raped coming home from work one afternoon. Obviously traumatized, she had intended not to tell anyone about the incident, for fear of how Arthur would react. But unfortunately, she found herself pregnant soon after, much as she had feared. Lately, Arthur and Annie had been experiencing some tension in their relationship, and Annie did not want to take the risk of telling him. She already knew she wanted an abortion, so she spared Arthur the pain of knowing what had happened, and got the abortion on her own. She couldn't stand having a reminder of the horrible moment living with her, and she knew she couldn't deal with giving the child up once he or she was born. But once the procedure was finished, rather than returning to normal, their lives became more strained than ever before. Arthur suspected Annie was withholding information from him and tried to talk to her about it on numerous occasions. Annie was, understandably, having trouble recovering. She joined a support group without Arthur's knowledge.
