Nathan, Benjamin, Nora, and Madeline are all in fifth grade this year. Nathan and Madeline are in one class, and Benjamin and Nora are in the other. Nora has the best grades; she got straight A's on her last report card. Nathan got four A's and two B's; Madeline got two A's and four B's; and Benjamin got one A, two B's, and three C's. Nora bears the closest resemblance to Daniel; she has wavy honey-blonde hair and Daniel's blue eyes. Nathan also has honey-colored hair, but he has Cata's deep brown eyes. Benjamin's hair is a mix of his parents'; it's wavy and medium brown. Madeline actually looks the most like Cata, despite the fact she is not Cata's child. She has the same straight dark brown hair and tan complexion, but she is the only one in the family to have green eyes.
Trent is in fourth grade this year. He is very smart, but he is also rather lazy (like his father). Trent is the tallest of the children and has light blonde hair and blue eyes. Cata jokes that she thinks Anna (Madeline's mother) got confused about which baby was hers.
Daniel is in second grade. As he has Cerebral Palsy, he has to use crutches to get around, and he has trouble keeping up with the other children. He gets frustrated often, but he never stops trying. Daniel has brown hair and eyes.
Jace and Kathryn are in kindergarten this year. They are both absolutely adorable. Jace has wavy dark blonde hair similar to Daniel's and brown eyes, while Kathryn has wavy light brown hair and blue eyes. Jace is very energetic; even Cata sometimes has trouble keeping up. Kathryn is more reserved, but she can get going when she wants to!
Seven months ago, Cata's younger sister, Graciela, was killed in a car crash. Chela's husband, Peter, had been shot to death during a jewelery store robbery seven years ago. Graciela left behind two daughters, Tasha Raquel and Heather Anica, aged nine and eight. For now, their last name will remain Smith, but Heather has asked if it would be okay to change it to Blackwood. Both girls, and Cata, took the loss of Chela very hard, but everyone is adjusting.
Tasha, who is in fourth grade, is very outgoing and friendly. Her energy is astounding, and she already has a circle of friends in the school, ranging from second-graders up to sixth-graders. She is always ready to try new things, and she is generally just a lot of fun. Tash has wavy dark blonde hair - a trait she got from Peter - and brown eyes. She is short for her age, but she never lets that get in her way.
Heather, who is in third grade, is far more reserved than her sister. Heather is a friendly child and is well-liked, but she is very introverted. She was this way even before Chela's death. She is one of the smartest children in her school, and almost always gets straight A's. Heather has wavy light brown hair and grey-blue eyes. She is even shorter for her age than Tash is, but she doesn't seem to care.
Neither Cata nor Daniel has given up work, but Daniel has rearranged his hours at his martial arts school so his adult classes are while the kids are in school and on Cata’s day off, and he has all ten of the kids in the kids’ class after school. Both of them have the babysitters - two high school students - as their number one on speed dial on their cell phones. Samantha and Randi Peterson are the best-paid babysitters in Dallas.
