The Whitestones are both descendants of the English aristocracy.
Desmond and Evelyn's fathers were friends at Eton and their families socialized together through the years after as their families grew. When Desmond turned 25, and Evelyn was 21, he proposed to her on the occasion of his parents' golden wedding anniversary. They had a formal wedding with an Anglican ceremony and an elaborate reception the following summer.
Now, at 26, the wedding festivity is over, and although they are fond of each other, it is clear that this is a marriage of convenience and familiarity rather than one of passionate love.
