DS:David Samuel Jr. newborn in 1915
Just after the new year began in 1915, Opal June gave birth to her first son, after six daughters. David was elated, until it became obvious that his wife was not going to recover as easily from this birth as she had from all the others. After losing too much blood and contracting a fever, it took her months to regain even a fraction of her strength and health.
At the beginning of 1916, David Jr. was hale and hearty, but his mother was still quite sickly. The family took turns feeding the fireplace to try to keep Opal June warm. One day, some sparks escaped and there was a horrible fire. Opal June and David were able
to get all of the children out in time, but he died in the blaze.
Opal June and the children were forced to move back into the tiny cottage that she and David had shared at the beginning of their marriage, as they began to have the family that outgrew it.
The very next week after the move, Hazel Grace came home from school feeling ill. In her weakened state, Opal June was the next to contract influenza, and the first to die. In the cramped little cottage, the children all became sick quickly. Somehow, Ruby Iris was able to nurse her siblings through her own illness, but only she and little David Jr. survived.
