Shortly after Thomas was born, Benny and Ella's relationship went rocky, and they called off their engagement. Part of the problems stemmed from Ella's jealousy over Benny and Sara's history, and the fact that they were still very good friends. In the end, Benny admitted to having been in love with Sara since high school, but said that they were only friends, as Sara never felt the same way about him. However, Benny was mistaken, and the two finally got together shortly after Gretchen's seventh birthday, and got married shortly thereafter, much to the surprise and delight of their family and friends, who always harbored hope for the two. However, Benny was mistaken, and the two finally got together shortly after Gretchen's seventh birthday, and got married shortly thereafter, much to the surprise and delight of their family and friends, who always harbored hope for the two.
