If the author is taking any liberties with the time period (which most do with Arthurian pieces), it could also derive from the Old Scandinavian "Ketil" (still used in Norwegian), or the Anglo-Saxon "Cytra", both male names. Both these names occurred in England from about AD 700 til 900-1100.
