I'll ignore the prattle and just try to answer the question. "Marshall" comes from the Latin "mariscalcus", meaning "horse servant".
It was originally someone who was in charge of the household horses and eventually changed over time to indicate a high military leader. The designation was used in both England and Scotland. In 13th century England, William Marshal was the most powerful man in the country after the king.
It's basically a surname altho used on occasion as a first name.
