my daughter's name
Can anyone help with history or origin information on the name Moya? The only two things I know is that in Celtic it may mean "great" and in Spanish it may mean "clay jar". Some sites have even said Spanish meaning "great'. So you can see how I would be in a quandry. (I also know that it is the name of a leviathan: that's how I came across it.)

As the others have said, normally Moya is one of the many Irish forms of Maire or Mary. But I have no idea if that's where the writers of Farscape discovered it or if they independently invented it.

Moya is a regional variant of Máire. It's is how Máire is pronounced in Co. Donegal (it sometime used as a name in it's own right spelt Moya). So if you are looking for an Irish meaning of Moya check out Máire.

Well I've seen Celtic singer Maire Brennan / Moira Brennan's name pronouced as Moya before so I would think that as far as it't Celtic connection would be to Maire, Moira, Moyra, and Mary. I'm not at all sure about it's Spanish connections. It's a beautiful name by the way!I hope I could help but there really doesn't seem to be much about Moya out there.
