You might also try www.genforum.com That site contains message boards for 1,000's of surnames, with postings by people both seeking and volunteering information on each name and on family connections. Many of these have postings explaining the meaning and origin of the name. Give it a try!

You will get a whole slew of websites you can explore for the meanings of various surnames.
Alternately, you can just post the surname you need help with right here on this board. A lot of us have reference resources which include surnames, and we may be able to pull out a meaning for you.
