what is the meaning of my name? A little boy of 8 yrs, who later died of the polio he had, asked my folks if he could name me when I was born on march 1, 1932. They said ok and he named me SELVIN. I can't find my name on any list. A Pastor in portland,Or, when i was little said it meant the forester but i can't verify it.

This is probably a variation of Salvin and Selwin, which are English surnames which have three different possible origins, according to Reaney & Wilson's A Dictionary of English Surnames. First, they can be frome the Latin name Silvanus, which is based on the Latin word silva, which meant "woodland"; second, it can be from the Old French word salvagin, meaning "wild, savage"; or third, from an Old English given name, Selewine, composed of syllables meaning "hall" and "friend".
