Any help on MORTERMERROW would be wonderful. No one in the family has any idea. This was my g-gf and he went by Gil - any wonder? His gf was William Allen PORTER b. Long Island, NY 1807. But we're not sure of origins or ethnicity back beyond that.

Which town on L.I. was he born in?

Our family info says Wm Allen Porter was born in Suffolk Co., L.I. in 1807. So far no confirmation from any sources, except 1850 Illinois census lists him and his family, but strangely his first name noted as only initial "J", whereas wife and all children names and dates match. Also, no knowledge of parents or siblings of Wm.

At first glance, it looks like a variation of Mortimer , which is Old French for "still water". In addition, Ogilvie looks French to me also, the end spelling is similar to the French name, Sylvie .

Thank you Andrea - my, that was nearly an instant response.. The family has wracked their collective brain on this and we've gone through the variations of Mortimer and all sorts of other origins sites and research dictionaries. The French-connection might hold some water, as we've found links from his grandmother way back into early France. But I seriously doubt they new of that back then.. I'm hoping to find a usage of the name elsewhere in the world... One would hope his parents based it on something in either of their families that we don't know of, rather than just winging it. Or worse yet, intending some other name, and just misspelling it.

According to the kabalarians, Ogilvie is Scottish. Through a search, I've found that Ogilvie is a Scottish Clan from the 1100's:
