This sounds like an illigitemate name that someone is trying to pass off as a joke. Can someone clue me in if it is not?
This seems to be a real surname. Most of the references on the Web seem to come from Germany, though I can't find the name in my German surname dictionary, so it may not be originally a German language surname. It is probably an alternative spelling for a name which is more often spelled Lepenies. There is a German sociologist named Wolf Lepenies, and several references to him on the Web are typos which call him "Wolf Lepenis." However, there is a mathematician in Germany named Rouven Lepenis, and that does seem to be the true spelling of his surname, from the references I can find to him on the Web.
