Gnossos Pappadopoulis is the main character in Richard Farina's Been Down So Long It Looks Like Up To Me. I was hoping someone could shed some light on the meaning of his first name.

Perhaps it's related to Greek gnosis "knowledge", as in Gnosticism?

Yep, the author probably had the word "gnosis" in mind when he concocted the ersatz Greek name Gnossos Pappadopoulis :)

...Lol, I just noticed that someone wrote in the one of the margins of the book before I got it, "Gnossos--'knowledge' --> agnostic (heretical)". I guess the answer was in front of me without me knowing it!
