As a general comment, Sikh/Punjabi names often have folk etymologies which differ from their historical origin. I do not know for certain in the case of Manvinder, but I can see that application of Sanskrit liasion rules to a Punjabi form of the words can give rise to this, and those are the ideal cases for folk etymologies to arise.
