Hi
My new grandaughter iis named Tennille can you helpas to what meaning it has.
I suspect that your best friend's parents may have been fans of a soft-rock duo named "The Captain and Tennille" who were popular back in the 1970s. ("Popular", that is, for folks who thought "Muskrat Love" really rocked, I suppose).
The name "Tennille" (like the song, "Muskrat Love") doesn't seem to have appealed to a very large proportion of the U.S. population outside of those parents naming new babies in the 1970s. A quick check of the Social Security Administration's actuarial notes for the top 1000 baby names for each decade revealed that the name "Tennille" ranked #952 in the 70's -- it does not appear on any previous or subsequent decades' top 1000 lists.
The name "Tennille" seems to be a surname of French origin, which can also be found among a number of old families in American's Deep South. Toni Tennille (the prettier half of The Captain and Tennille duo) was born in Alabama. There is also a town named "Tennille" in the state of Georgia.
It's not unusual for people to give an pleasant-sounding surname to a baby as that child's first name. The name "Taylor", for instance, this year rose to the number seven position among most popular baby girls' names in the U.S.
Perhaps you might find out more about the name by visiting and posting an inquiry on the Tennille Family Genealogy Forum at:

Good luck! And come back here and tell us about the name if and when you find out more.

You brought me back a fond childhood memory. As a kid back in '75 a friend used to play a Tenille 45 single at 33 speed. Tenille sounded like a guy singing "The way I love a man". Gave my pals and I a lots to chuckle about.
I'm kind of amazed that the music of The Captain and Tennille actually found an audience over in the British Isles (where, I presume, you grew up). I'll be positively astounded if you tell me that people were listening to this stuff over in Greece back in the mid-'70s. (I can just picture the Hellenists looking oddly at each other, and saying: "WHAT kind of 'rat' love was that???"
Has that ouzo kicked in yet? :)

Actually, the song was quite popular in Greece, under the title "Mouskourat Love". And Che confided to me that he's not altogether sure that Toni Tennille should be considered the prettier half of the duo. Incidentally, the "Captain" is named Daryl Dragon, neither of which names is my first choice to hand on a defenseless child.
Your 70's opinion: who has the bigger mouth, Tennille or Carly Simon?

Actually CheBanana was born 'n' raised in Hellas, never got my tan by standing in the English rain. And yes, i'm ashamed to admit that we Hellenes were rodentially involved back in 70s. But I guess all cultures exhibited cheesy manifestations back then.
Ouzo isnt quite kicking, currently experimenting with Cretan moonshine calles Tsikoudia.
