My great grandmother was from Oklahoma, her maiden name was Hunt. Her dads name was Joel Hunt and what I'm looking for is the last name Hunt an indian name and if so what tribe and whats the meaning. My email is sandblast1969@yahoo.com.

I don't think you're going to have much luck finding her tribe based on her name, unless you can get information on her specifically. A lot of indigenous people in North America adopted or were given European surnames, often in the process of baptism or registry with the government. I'd be willing to wager that Hunt, in this case, is roughly equal to the English surname. There's a really slim chance that Hunt is a truncated version of a longer name that's derived from one in the tribal language, if she is in fact of aboriginal ancestry, but even if that's true, it's not going to help you much. Sorry.

The meaning is simply the word 'hunt' - it's an occupational surname, to hunt . . . and no, Hunt is not Indian, it's English. I honestly don't think that there are many people with the last name Hunt in India. :)

There are probably a number of Anglo-Indians with the surname Hunt. In the context of my job, I often view files originated by Indian people, with the original creator of the file's name visible, and it's nearly as common for the surname to be one I recognise as English (usually with an English, very often biblical, given name) as it is for it to be a recognisably Indian name.
I believe by Indian he was referring to Native American.
