Iwel
What's the meaning of the masculine name Iwel. It was my cousin's name, born in 1850 in Poland in a Jewish family.
In fact, it could be the pet form of another name, since it was the case for his brother, on the same document.

Thanks. But maybe the Yiddish form / pet form is Iwel?

that might be cause i found some surnames:abelski = son of abel (obvious)
iwelski = son of iwel (so iwel is a name)
and ibelski (this seems like the middle form between abel and iwel and so it was right after all i guess
but it must have been the Yiddish that changed it cause it is not a normal Ubergang from the letter 'b' to 'w' in Polish as i believe

Oh thank you!
You know, in Hebrew the "b" and the "v" are often interchangeable (Abraham / Avraham, Deborah / Dvorah, Rebecca / Rivka...), so maybe it explains the Abel / Iwel stuff...
