Ive noticed a few Huon's around, it seems to be a name used mainly in Australia. I konw one in his mid 30's, an 18 year old and a 10 year old.

According to the following site, the Huon River and Valley in Tasmania were named after a French sea captain and explorer, Huon De Kermadec, so a French diminutive of Hugh is probably the correct answer, as Anneza said:

I can't prove this, but it looks like the same sort of diminutive form - in this case, of Hugh - that gives Alison from Alice. But how it ended up in Tassie is more than I can guess.
