Mishiki (Japanese)?
My old "baby names" book listed Mishiki as an Egyptian name meaning "apricot" or "east". That, I think, is an obvious fiction; and googling Mishiki brings up almost exclusively Japanese sites.
I don't know anything about Japanese, and comparing the name to other names in the database hasn't helped, as the -ki suffix seems to have multiple meanings. Can anyone who knows Japanese decipher the meaning?
I've always thought this would be a great name for a cat, but I'm loath to use it unless I know what it means. :-D

Mishiki is not Japanese
Hello!
I'm Japanese and I'm afraid Mishiki is not a Japanese name, either male or female.
It's true It sounds like Japanese but unfortunately it's not a human name.
You said you have googled Mishiki and found a lot of Japanese sites,so I did the same. And I found out that there are so many Mishiki as well, but the thing is, it was a site of a famous restaurant called 'Mishiki' and they made up the name. You found a lot of Japanese sites with mishiki and I think it's because many magazines or tourinst information sites have a search engines for restaurants and pubs and shops etc. so that even a stranger can get some information.
Anyway, I read an introduction about the Mishiki restaurant and it said that the meaning of the name is " the colour of the taste". Very attractive name,I suppose.
I hope it could help you somehow.
If you have any more quwstion, please ask.

Mishiki exists
Hi.
I think it is because of my handle name. I am a male Japanese.
One of the most famous "mishiki" is me, because I did some commercial illustration works. In my Chinese characters, "mishiki" literally means "not awakened yet".
The URL below is my site.
http://ofo.jp/osakana/profile.phtml
But, there are people who really named "Mishiki" in Japan.
A few years ago, A boy mailed me that his first name is the same as my handle name.
Also, you could find some "mishiki" in the following search, which collects more then 110,000 Japanese girls name.

Thanks! I see that you searched by the Hiragana spelling and got to the Kanji. That is neat! Could you send the URL of the main search page?
Now, the only question is what the chinese characters mean. It gives three spellings which I can look up as (order of pronounciation of the characters is Hang|Cant|HanPin|Mand|Kor|Viet|On|Kun)
実紫姫
U+5b9f |||SHI2|SIL||JITSU SHITSU|MI MINORU MICHIRU
real, true; honest, sincere
U+7d2b *tziɛ̌|zi2|zi3(49)|ZI3|CA|tía|SHI|MURASAKI
purple, violet; amethyst; surname
U+59eb |||JI1|HUY||KI|HIME
beauty; imperial concubine
美紫姫

You can only search from its top page.
"Girls' name dictionary" plan
http://www.dd.iij4u.or.jp/~ume20/f_name/
Input hiragana in the edit box, and choose radio buttons.
choices mean like this:
( )hiragana(pronunciation) ( )all ( )contain
(*)kanji (*)legal kanji only (*)match perfectly
You need to notice that this dictionary contains a lot of fictional names. Some kanji, having an evil meaning or very complexed , cannot be registered as a name by law in Japan. About 3000 types of kanji are legislated to name someone. This is why the second choice exists in the web page.
Those three "Mishiki" can exists legally.
First one is just ordered kanji by their sound and it looks little bit nonsense for me, but it literally means "purple fruit princess / girl".
Second one is meaningful. it literally means "beautiful purple princess / girl". Purple is a color implies nobility.
Last one also has a good meaning. it means "beautiful cloth / knit".

Thanks. I do not believe http://ofo.jp/osakana/profile.phtml is talking of a restaurant, but since I do not read Japanese, I am lost what it is talking about ... help? The same person/object/place is being talked about at http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E5%88%A9%E7%94%A8%E8%80%85:Mishiki.
This is the 未識 I mentioned in my previous post, the restaurant you are talking about is probably in Nagoya and is often associated with the Kanji 洋魂和菜? (which is what?)

Japanese names usually have more than one `spelling' when written in Japanese, and each of them has a different meaning. Just for example, there is a Mishiki Sakata on the internet who spells the name as 未識
From the unicode database (Order of pronounciations: Tang|Cant|HanPin|Mand|Kor|Viet|On|Kun) 未識 is
U+672a *miə̀i|mei6|wei4(328)|WEI4|MI|mùi|MI BI|IMADA HITSUJI
not yet; 8th terrestrial branch
U+8b58 *shiək|sik1 zi3|shi5(908) shi2(267)|SHI5 SHI4 SHI2 ZHI4|
SIK CI| |SHIKI SHOKU SHI|SHIRU SHIRUSHI SHIRUSU
recognize, understand, know
Of course, there is a more noticeable Mishiki Nagoya, who spells it differently. Since I do not know Japanese, I can't even guess how many different names are all pronounced Mishiki!
