This is an old thread so I don't know if anyone is still following, but my great grandfather was also named Ilko, his last name was recorded as Melnyczyn when he came through Ellis Island in 1910, and it was later changed to Melnysyn, which is my last name. I think I remember my father saying that he went by "Eli" once in the US. He was from Capowce, Galicia, and his ethnicity was recorded as Ruthenian on the Ellis Island roster. He always identified as Ukrainian.
