Here's my latest column. Valerie is interesting as a Baby Boomer name in the USA which is still maintaining a fair amount of use.

Interesting factoid that it first gained popularity after being used in romance novels. It does have a romantic air to it... IMO.
I've definitely noticed that, unlike a lot of baby boomer names, Valerie still seems to be in regular use on kids. Contrast that with names like Cheryl, Karen, and Deborah, which you don't hear on kids much anymore (especially Karen due to it becoming a slang term).
