I consider them not reliable. They are accumulating a lot of databases with very varying quality (e.g., US census data) and they don't seem to have any quality assurance in operation. I think forbears.io is not suitable to give evidence for rare names, when a name occurs only in small numbers on forebears.io this is most probably due to errors of any kind (wrong spelling when notating the name, wrong reading when digitising the name, wrong categorisation (given name or surname), artefacts not being a name at all (e.g., titles or professions), truncation, wrong gender attribution, just to name a few.
