My column on Sally
Here is the link to today's column:https://omaha.com/lifestyles/cleveland-evans-now-uncommon-sally-was-found-on-stage-screen-and-sky/article_3af43794-5af7-11ed-a327-c765d849f05a.htmlIt was a bit of a surprise to me to see that the most common spelling of this name in the USA in the late 19th and early 20th centuries was definitely Sallie. It's one of those minor facts that had never crossed my radar before. :) Not quite sure why that was the case, though it may have something to do with -ie being considered a more "feminine" spelling than -y, as shown by pairs like Billy & Billie, Bobby & Bobbie, Andy & Andie, etc.

Interesting, indeed! Here in South Africa I've known one Sallie and umpteen Sally people. My father wanted to name me Sarah after his late mother; my mother vetoed it and I'm grateful, but also a bit sorry that they didn't think of using Sally instead of Sarah. I much prefer it.
